What happens when I protect something?
Register fingerprints of your work under your Ma’atara identity. The record becomes public; your source work does not.
What you can protect today
Protect accepts images, video and pasted writing. Images are limited to 50 MB and video to 500 MB; decoding also depends on the formats and codecs your browser supports. Audio is not available in Protect or Detect.
Detect searches images only. Registering video or writing does not make video-file or text search available in this app. Detect searches the Ma’atara index, not the wider web.
What registration creates
For an image or video, your browser computes fingerprints and signs a matching record called a capsule. The service receives that capsule, signature and registration metadata, not the source file. Visual recognition may download a model to run on your device.
Writing uses a separate fingerprint registration, authorized by your identity. It does not create the signed media capsule checked by Verify. The writing itself stays in your browser.
Registration and your chain
After registration, Protect attempts to add a reference to your personal chain. If that second step fails, the page reports it separately: a registered work is not necessarily recorded on your chain. Keep the returned asset identifier and your original work.
What a record establishes
A record provides evidence of a registration and, for a signed capsule, a link to its signing key. It does not establish legal ownership, authorship, or the original creation date.
Fingerprints can help find altered copies, but edits can prevent a match and unrelated works can resemble one another. Public fingerprints and record metadata can be correlated with known content and identities.
